Chiefs Crowned by Knights

Exhibition or not, you never want to be shutout on your home ice.

But, that’s what happened to the Kelowna Chiefs Friday, as the North Okanagan Knights rolled into the Rutland Arena and blanked the Chiefs 4-0.

After some Grade A chances early by the Chiefs were turned away, the Knights capitalized with a couple of goals against the run of play.

They rolled on from there.

At one point, the Chiefs held a 14-2 edge in shots, but it was the Knights who kept chipping away.

One bright spot for the Chiefs was the play of goaltender Robbie Paialunga, who stopped two breakaways late in the third period.

Both teams will fine tune their rosters a little bit, then do it all again Saturday back in Rutland.

Face off is 7 p.m.

The Chiefs will open the regular season on the road next weekend before hosting the Chase Heat in their home opener Friday, Sept. 20.

The Chiefs will pay tribute prior to the game to co-owner Grant Sheriden, who lost his brief battle bacterial meningitis July 28 at the age of 47.
